ICYMI: A couple of messages from our President, Glen Borg

Email sent on 27 March 2020

All Members,

Following on from my email sent yesterday (copy below) and in support of today’s SLSNSW Media release and advice from the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch. We have decided to adopt the recommendations and have ceased all patrols ending our season as of today, Friday, March 27, 2020. Branch Support operations will continue to do surveillance, and we ask that our emergency call-out teams remain available to be tasked.

If you are on our call-out team, please ensure your contact details are updated on Surf Guard. Our Club Captain, Jess, will provide further information on this for the team.

As reported last night (26/03/2020), Sydney Northern Beaches has the third largest amount of reported cases of COVID-19 of any area.

We understand that this is an ever changing situation, and there will be varied opinions on this situation. We are taking the view that the safety of our membership is paramount. We are hoping that closed beaches will deter people from congregating at the beach and help end this pandemic sooner than otherwise.

Trainers and Coaches are instructed to cease all training and other activities. If you remove your gear from the sheds or containers, do not return it to the club. We cannot have people moving back and forth from the club.

We know that this situation will place financial, physical and mental stress on many families and individuals. Please reach out to one another and check on family and friends, this is an opportunity to get creative on how we support one another.

On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank you all for your support and efforts over the current patrol season.

Please stay safe.

Regards

Glen

Hi All,

First I would like to acknowledge that many of our members will be going through a tough time brought on by the extraordinary events of this year culminating in this latest pandemic. While we are not able to offer the facilities of the Clubhouse, our Newport SLSC community stands ready to support you. I encourage each of you to reach out to the committee if you need support but also connect with each other, either through email, social media or over the phone.

I will provide further information on the status of our patrols soon. I am unable to give that now as our State and Branch levels are still discussing their position with Local and State Governments.

In line with the Federal and State Governments introduction of new lock down measures to stem the spread of corona virus, the Clubhouse is closed until further notice. The only exception to this will be for our on-duty patrolling members and current Officeholders including Administration personnel performing club duties. Other than these, no one is to access the club.

During this challenging time, your health, safety and well-being continue to stay our prime concern.  We do not have the resources to maintain a safe environment when the club, change rooms, bar and gym are subject to regular traffic.

We will continue to monitor the situation and Government health and safety advice and update you with any significant developments.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your understanding and support, and I look forward to seeing you all back on the beach once this situation passes.

Warm Regards,

Glen Borg
President NEWPORT SLSC Inc.
