Courses run by SLS SNB will be either a Nationally Recognised Qualification or a SLSA Award. This Spinal Management course is a SLSA Award.

Course Purpose: The aim of the course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to manage injured casualties with suspected spinal injuries in an aquatic environment and in emergency situations.
Pre-requisite: A candidate must be a minimum of 16 years on the date of assessment PUAEMOO1A – Provide Emergency Care OR A current SLSA Bronze Medallion/Cert II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) OR A current SLSA Senior First Aid Certificate - CPR component must have been updated within last 12 months) Competency Standards HLTAMBAE4A – Follow procedures for the safe extrication of patient in a life threatening situation.
Course Content
- • Factors and methods of moving a casualty
- • The possible causes of spinal injuries
- • Signs and symptoms of a patient with suspected spinal injuries
- • The principles of immobilization for spinal injuries
- • Management of head and spinal injuries
- • Demonstrate the management of head and spinal injuries
- • Detail the precautions necessary for the transportation of casualties with suspected spinal injuries
Learning Activity:
Students will be required to complete the questions contained within the learners guide as part of the underpinning knowledge as well as participate in a combination of demonstration and simulation activities.
The simulation and demonstration activities will relate directly to the following key aspects of this unit
- • Cervical Collars
- • Preparing and responding to a suspected spinal injury/rescue
- • Participating in assessing the rescue scene
- • Suspected Spinal injury management techniques
- •The use of Spinal Boards, Head Blocks and Support equipment
Please note that this course does require lifting.
Prior reading
Candidates should attempt to read chapters 18 and 21 of the SLSA First Aid and Emergency Care Manual prior to attending the course.
Course Duration
Course duration will be approximately 4 hours and consists of a theory component as well as practical and scenario exercises. The practical exercises may be in the water. Candidates must be prepared to attend both the theory and skills area of the course.
Course Registration/Process
Those Surf life Savers who are interested in attending the course need to advise their Club’s Chief Training Officer or Club Administration. Clubs should book candidates in for this course through the Branch Office by emailing sandy@surflifesaving.net.au.
The course is limited to 20 candidates per facilitator. Preparation Spinal Management Workbook, Assessment Workcard and Training enrolment forms will be provided at the course to candidates. All candidates will require a pen and paper.
Process
Club Administration is to create Spinal Management Assessment Request in Surfguard and ‘submit’ for Branch approval. All candidates must sign the ‘sign on sheet’ at the course. At completion of assessment the Facilitator will send sign on sheet, participant evaluation of course forms and any other documents to the Branch Office the day following the course for processing. Any queries can be directed to the Branch Office.
LEVEL 1 OFFICIALS COURSE
A level 1 officials course will be on 30th August. It is usually a whole day and is at this stage being held at Mona Vale SLSC -tbc.
LEVEL 1 COACHING COURSE
Level 1 Coaching course is on 24th September at SLS NSW at Narrabeen.
