SNB Series Round 2, October 31, Newport

Yet another great day at Newport, a wonderful club effort and many thanks to all those who contributed to another seamless event.
The nor’easter had been up all night, so a lumpy short swell, combined with a remnant southerly swell made for lively water. High tide at 0800 made for an interesting edge (surprising, that) which evened out as the tide dropped.
Seventy two crews turned up to challenge themselves and the surf.
Newport had four U/19 crews and an U/23 womens crew entered, all products of the Junior Development Programme. Also racing were the U/23 Makos, a reserve grade crew and two masters crews also in reserves. In the last round of the u/19s, all four Newport crews were in the same race.
The best result came from the U/19 Gropers (Josh Crowe, Julian Small, Lucas Wilson, Tom Holland and sweep Mark Fitzgerald) with a very close second. The U/19 Tallywhackers (Jake Butcher, Marley Evans, Sean Emerson, Steve Beukers and Rob Emerson, sweep) finished 5th. It's going to be close all season between these two crews.
The Makos were also in the U/23 final and Jess Menzies, obviously a little tired of being a first aider, thought she might see it from the other side and made her debut rowing in the U/23 Sunshine. Welcome aboard, Jess.
We had a wonderful example of all our training in action... The Newport Makos had just rowed the last round of the Open boat and headed off for a run and swim north, near the Peak, as they only had a one race break before the U/23 final. Mona Vale B crew were already up there warming up before their final. They spotted a group of swimmers in trouble, there was a water safety duck sitting up there, so while the group dragged it into the water, one ran down the beach to alert the officials, James Brook and Tom Kellaway grabbed the tube out of the duck and swam to the patients. The Mona Vale blokes got the duck out to them, the jetski (operated by Kieran Menzies) turned up and all five patients were returned to shore. Then they all rowed their finals.
At the end of the day, the deck was chocka with tired and happy boaties and workers rehydrating, grooving to ‘The Endless Strummers’ and hunting down the last of the sausage sambos.
