Defibrillation Course

This Defib course is a Nationally Recognised Qualification.
COURSE PURPOSE
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and application using advanced life support techniques with a semi-automatic external defibrillator.
PREREQUISITES
Minimum of 15 years of age on the date of assessment
PUAEM001A Provide Emergency Care OR
SLSA Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) OR
SLSA Senior First Aid Certificate (CPR component must have been updated within last 12 months)
COURSE CONTENT
Explain the anatomy and physiology of the heart
Explain the links in the chain of survival
Explain where automatic external defibrillators fit into the pre-hospital Emergency care
system
Demonstrate CPR
Demonstrate infection control procedures
Describe the electrical activity of the heart
Demonstrate the process of defibrillation
COMPETENCY STANDARDS
PUAOPED010A – Operate a defibrillator in an emergency situation
COURSE DURATION
This course is to be conducted over approximately 4 hours (this is a guide only due
to candidates already being trained in CPR. Time to develop competencies
depends on factors such as the prior knowledge and experience of candidates
and demonstration of a high standard of CPR).
LEARNING OUTCOME
At the completion of this course, the surf lifesaver will be competent in the care of
people suffering cardiac arrest through the initiation of effective resuscitation and
early defibrillation.
VALIDITY OF AWARD
Once the candidate has completed the course the qualification is valid for 1 year, and
then candidates must complete a proficiency in the Award.
PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL ASSESSMENT
Participants will be assessed in theoretical and practical aspects of resuscitation
and semi-automatic external defibrillation.
PROCESS
Those Surf Life Savers who are interested in attending the course need to
advise their Club’s Chief Training Officer or Club Administration. Clubs should book
candidates in for this course by email to: sandy@surflifesaving.net.au by 29th May @ 10am. The course is limited to 20 candidates per facilitator.
1. Training enrolment forms will be provided to the candidates on the day of the course.
2. Candidates are to bring pen and paper.
3. Clubs are required to create a new Defib Award Assessment in Surfguard for
their candidates dated for the course they are attending.
4. All Candidates must sign the ‘sign on sheet’ at the course.
5. The Facilitator is required is to return the sign on sheet, relevant course equipment and paperwork to the Branch Office as soon as possible after the course.
