News from the Rowers

So, another season over and another trip to Perth. We didn't get any results over there, or really get close to any, but everyone had a good go. Most crews had been disrupted in the weeks prior to leaving- mainly with bloody work getting in the way- disgraceful!!

We had two colts crews, one swept by me and one by Bortho, Rob's juniors, Jess and the girls and a motley masters crew. Motley because at the last minute two of the crew had to withdraw, leaving the two supersubs, myself and Glenno filling in with Jack and Bags- a hard row home.

Josh Hayward was very disappointed he couldn't get to Perth as he'd just picked up an engineering apprenticeship with Qantas, so Lachy Brook rowed both juniors and colts.

The colts rowed As as well (another night off the squirt), Bortho getting a row with his boys. The girls went well, just missing the cut in open women, generally fitness costing them in the last quarter of the race. The juniors put in a great effort, but in dead flat water a 19yr old is always going to smoke a 16yr old- next year boys (and for a couple of them the next three)

So onto next year and planning is already under way. Rob, with help from Jack, Bortho and Leanne are putting a junior development plan into action. We have 12 sixteen year olds comng down to Bayview on Sunday to try it out, with more to try it over the next few weeks.

We are also turning over a few of our boats, we're giving one of our old boats to Coffs and looking at giving away another to make some room in the now truncated boatshed. We are looking at raising money for a new boat, to see us right for the next three or four years.

As we did about eight years ago we'll be running a raffle, $150 a ticket to get naming rights to boat, oars etc. We're aiming to raise enough money to get some gym equipment as well. I'll let you know when you need to open your wallets. Which reminds me- the raffle we ran before the Aussies, and thanks to those who bought tickets and to Paul Quin who donated the first prize (mountain bike) and those who helped out with the other prizes. Ist Prize - Dave Perry Collaroy Surf Club 2nd Prize - Claudia Forsyth - Nth Curl Curl 3rd Prize - Liz Turvey 4th prize - Megan Hayward.

We also ran a successful trivia night, thanks to Jess Squires for providing so many excellent prizes.

Last weekend was Elle Panno-no-more's wedding. After two weeks of rain we had a sparkling day for her ceremony on the wharf at the Quarantine Staion, then a pleasant afternoon in the sun at Manly Skiff Club. Elle and Ant both looked radiant and obviously head over heels for each other. It was a happy, chatty, delightful day and I wish them all the best and a wonderful future together. Apparently this was also her last season rowing.

Also, Dale is pregnant, not that surprising a statement due to his girly hips (I can talk). Well, actually Jules is- once again, fantastic news congratulations and can't wait for you both to get back here.

See you all on the beach,

MK

Branch Massacre

On Saturday Newport won the Masters division of the Branch by 390 pts to Manly's 294 and Queenscliff's 279.

We also finished an extraordinary seventh in Open competition -- we could have got fifth with just a few more competitors.

Overall, including Open and Juniors, Newport now ranks number four in the Branch, headed only by the sheer numbers at Manly, Freshie and Queenscliff.

Medal Winners - Open Branch Championships

Newport Competitors picked up 7 Gold medals in the Open Branch Championships at Newport.

We had terrific results with 2 golds in the First Aid Competition going to the U15s team of Chris Brigden and Brendan Menzies and the U19s team of Jessica Menzies and Alana Smithies.

Newport's 16 year old Jake Lynch continued his outstanding season with 3 gold medals at the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch championships at Newport last Saturday. He won Gold in the the U17 beach Sprint as well as the U17 Flags.

Jake later combined with Steve Hatch, Brett Macpherson and Drew Howell to take out the Gold in the Open beach Relay in convincing fashion.

In the U15's Tatum Ansiewicz picked up her first Championship Title in the senior ranks with a Gold in the Beach Sprint.

Our other Gold was won by our talented water competitor Ashley Kiernan who defeated a very stong field to take out the U17 Surf Ski Race.

In the open U19 age group, Grace Davies won two silver medals, in the ironwoman and in the surf race, these were among the best individual achievements in the Newport list, and in probably the most hotly contested water division of 'em all.
