Welcome to Newport SLSC
A
Tribute to Life Member - John Illingsworth 1922- 2012
We regret to advise the
passing of Newport Surf Club Life Member John Illingsworth late January.
John was a highly respected
member of the club and was very active in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
He was a regular surf boat
crew member and sweep of the double ended boats of the time and his wife
Billie, who survives him, was also active in the Ladies Club. John was involved
in many rescues having gained his Bronze Medallion in 1937 with Laurie Payne as
his instructor.
John served in World War 11
and was Club Captain in 1946/47. He met his wife Billie at the beach when she
sought treatment for bluebottle stings.
For our history book
published in 2009 John wrote "it goes without saying that to spend the
weekends on duty in the sun and surf while helping the community and to save
lives was a very rewarding feeling".
To those who knew John
Illingsworth he was a genuinely good bloke who served the club with
distinction. His sage advice as a Life Member was sought on many issues
The thoughts of Newport Surf
Club and its members are with his wife Billie and his children at this time of
sadness.

Newport Surf Club Swipe Access System
Newport Surf Club has a large number of members who have keys to the clubhouse. Over time the management of the key allocation has become increasingly difficult as:
- Some members leave the club and do not return their key
- Some people have had multiple keys issued as they have lost keys and others who have access to the lost keys.
Access to the club is a privilege to members who are financial and who have an ongoing commitment to the care of the clubhouse. In particular, it is important to recognize the need to maintain a high level of security for the building given vale and community importance of the surf rescue and equipment held within the clubhouse.
