Round 3 was held at Kirra beach on the 19th of December with just two Newport sprinters, Jake Lynch and Ben Ambrose (both current Australian medallists) heading up to Queensland to compete against some of the best competitors in Australia.

After hours of waiting they were finally able to get the open competition underway with Ben starting out in the U/17 men beach sprint qualifying for the final and finishing 6th in the final. Jake finished 3rd in the U/19 beach flags finishing behind his two main rivals. Jake also finished a very close 2nd in the U/19’s beach sprint. Ben and Jake both backed up for the open beach sprint going through 3 rounds with Jake coming in at 3rd and Ben in 4th  in the final. An outstanding result from both our competitors.

Our next Open carnival will be Queenscliff on 9th Jan., where we will have our full Beach Team competing along with our Water, R&R and Surfboat competitors.

Newport's Jake Lynch and Max Brooks represented Sydney Northern Beaches in the NSW Interbranch Championships held at Cape Hawke (near Forster) last weekend.

Both produced outstanding results.   Jake was 1st in the u19 Sprint , 1st in the u19 flags as well as part of the Senior Beach Relay which finished 1st.  Max was 2nd in the u15 Swim, 3rd in the u15 Ironman, 7th in the Board Rescue and 2nd in the Cameron Relay.

Congratulations to both of them.

Long Reef Boat Carnival

The 3rd round of the Sydney Northern Beaches Surf boat premiership was held on November 7th at Long Reef in relatively small choppy surf as a result of the strengthening northeaster.

Newport was well represented with three under 19 boys’ crews and our men’s reserve crew taking their place on the starting line.

After three rounds of the under 19 boys division, two of the Newport crews managed to accumulate enough points to earn a spot in the six boat final.

In a close contest the Gropers (Josh Crowe, Julian Small, Lucas Wilson, Tom Holland and sweep Mark Fitzgerald) rowed strongly to win the final in a wonderful display of rowing and the Tallywhackers (Jake Butcher, Marley Evans, Sean Emerson, Steve Beukers and Rob Emerson, sweep) finished in second place.  The quinella for Newport and the efforts of so many that have gone into our junior development program are starting to be rewarded in results.

The third junior crew comprised of Sean Fitzgerald, Mathew Trevitt were joined by replacement rowers Kate Hayward, Ellis James and Josh Hayward, sweep.  All these boys are first year rowers and with their rate of improvement and enthusiasm it won’t be long before they are making the finals also.

The newly formed Reserves Crew of Andy Charles, Tom Howse, Daniel joined by replacement under 23 gun James Brooks in place of our esteemed Boat Captain Bortho and Rob Emerson, sweep, had there first real hit out for the season finishing 2nd, 3rd & 5th in the rounds narrowly missing the finals.  With a little more training these boys will improve their results in leaps and bounds.

The rower of the round award must go to Kate Hayward.  Kate is a valuable member of one of our under 23 girls crew and as they were not contesting this carnival, was more than happy to fill in for the under 19 boys under the loving guidance of her older brother Josh as sweep.  Well done Kate great job.

Newport had all 8 beach competitors qualifying for the finals on the 22nd. The open men’s beach sprint had Jake Lynch and Steve Hatch in the final with Jake taking 3rd place. An all age relay was another category on the beach area consisting of an open, u/19, u/17 and a u/15 runner, Steve Hatch, Jake Lynch, Ben Ambrose and Josh Tyler were apart of that team that won the relay as well as taking the $1250 prize money.

In the u/19’s competition Jake Lynch took out the double in the beach flags and beach sprint and Robert Barkley finishing 2nd in the 19’s beach sprint. The u/17’s featured Mitch Rosic, Ben Ambrose and Luke Vescio in the final of the beach sprint with Ben finishing 2nd.

Josh Tyler was the only u/15’s beach competitor. Showing good form, Josh came in 3rd in the final of the beach sprint. The u/15’s were also well represented in the water with a good number of competitors qualifying for the finals.

Newport Surfboat Carnival

The Newport Junior Rowers Development Programme was on display on 31 October at the annual Newport surfboat carnival. Newport had four junior boat crews in the last heat of the u19s event and made up almost a third of the entire competitive field in the junior division.  As well as a junior (u23) women’s crew racing, with another junior (u23) women’s crew waiting to get into competition as soon as bronze medallions are awarded. In just its second year, the JRDP has increased competitors and members in the boat arena and has become a drawcard for new members as the word has spread of the fun and camaraderie within the group.  This influx has swollen the ranks of competitors to the extent that a new tent was needed just to sit everyone under shade at each carnival. Thanks to Sheldon Office Fitouts that was made possible as I am sure everyone who visited the carnival would have noticed.

See the slide show and a report from Michael King on the Boats page.

Grandparents Day

Another initiative of the JRDP that proved a huge success for the club and the rowers was the inaugural Grandparents Day. The JDRP took the opportunity of a home carnival, a viewing vists from inside the clubhouse with protection from the sun and sand to invite the juniors grandparents to watch them row. This was an opportunity of which most junior rowers grandparents took advantage. The club house was crowded with grandparents enjoying morning tea and watching their grandchildren compete, with some of the mothers of rowers explaining to them to procedures of the day, something which is rarely available to them.  A lot of positive feedback was received from the grandparents and they are all looking forward to coming again next year. The photograph below shows just some of the juniors and grandparents on the veranda.

Newport SLSC- The Masters

The first officially accredited Australian Masters Championships was held in 1991 at Cottesloe (Perth). Newport Surf life saving Club was represented in that carnival by Martin Lynch (beach events)and Lionel Fargher  (water Events). Martin won Newport’s first Australian masters championships gold medal at that carnival in winning the 35 years beach sprint event.

Prior to that championship, a number of Newport competitors competed in the “All States Masters” carnivals held in Wollongong in 1990, Pacific beach (Queensland) in 1989 and Bondi in 1988. These included Col MacLean, Bob Clarke, Richard McEvoy, Dave Oatley, Phil Longworth as well as Martin and Lionel.

Over the next two decades the Newport masters team grew in strength to a point where by the 2008 Australian masters championship in Scarborough (Perth), they finished  as the number one NSW masters club in the overall point score, with an impressive 6 gold medals in events ranging from the Men’s Surf Team (James Brooks, Ben Davies and Stewart Mears) to the Women’s (Robbie Cummins, Maragret Pearson, Mikke Foley and Sukie Southern) and Men’s Beach Relay (Ted Smithies, Rob Emerson , Brett Budd and Martin Lynch). Newport competitors also won 3 individual gold medals in Beach events (with Ted and Brett in the Sprints and Martin in the Flags).

Throughout the 90’s, Newport Surf Club was represented with success at every Australian Masters championship, with Martin Lynch winning numerous Sprint and Flags events and was later joined by Grant Currie who won the 35 years Beach Flags in 1998.

After 2000, the influx of “nipper parents” joining the club and becoming patrolling members began to impact on the numbers and quality of masters competitors. Ted Smithies, Brett Budd, Rob Emerson and Anthony Daube joined Martin Lynch in becoming the dominant Male Masters Beach Team in the Country, winning numerous individual titles as well as combining to become the most successful relay team in masters competition. Ted Smtihies commenced his run of nine successive sprint titles with a win in the 50years sprint in 2001.

In the Women, Margaret Pearson, Mike Foley, Sukie Southern, Robbie Cummins, Eva Daube and Elke Harman had great success in the Women’s Beach Relay and Mikke becoming an individual Australian master’s champion in the sprint.

A few years later our master’s water competitors began to emerge and were successful in 2007 with Ben Davies winning Newport’s first gold medal in a water event in any category. Ben won the 30 years Rescue Tube. The following year Ben was joined by James Brooks and Stuart Mears in winning the masters Surf Teams event.

The first 19 years (1991 - 2009) of Australian Masters competition has been a successful period with Newport competeing in a variety of disciplines ranging from Beach Events to Surf Boats to all the Water disciplines. Over that period our competitors have won a total of 40 gold medals. 33 individual, 7 in Team Events.
