Regular After Fives Get Togethers
The Centurions will be getting together on the last Sunday of each month. The first of these Sundays will be 29 June so we hope Centurion members can make it.
If you are not sure if you will know anybody just ask for Denis Payne, John Guthrie, Col Mclean, Ian Storey or Doug Menzies and you will be made very welcome. Failing that just offer to shout the bar and everyone will be your friend!
Club’s AGM 27 July, 2008
The club’s AGM will be held on Sunday 27 July, 2008 which also happens to be the last Sunday in the month. The meeting starts at 3.30pm so why not come along and see just how well your club is going, winning awards all over the place. It’s also a chance to see who’s elected.
Centurions will be getting together after the meeting so why not kill two birds with the one stone, come to the AGM and join us afterwards.
Centenary Planning Well Underway
Planning for the club’s centenary is well underway and the committee has a series of events including a centenary dinner, a sportsman’s lunch and a lot more on the agenda for the big year.
Look out for the Centurions newsletter and click on this website for future news.
Club’s Ocean Swim
It might seem a long way off but it will come around fast. The club’s ocean swim is scheduled for 30 November this year. It would be great to have a team of Centurions line up for the event, so start thinking about the training you need to do to get into nick.
It is a 2km swim known as the Pool to Peak. So dig into that old bag in the attic and dust off the togs and goggles so that you’re ready to join us. We might even organise some training sessions as the event gets closer if there are enough Centurions interested.
Centurions Helping To Celebrate The Club’s Centenary
The Newport Surf Club Centurions is a group of members and past members formed to help the club celebrate 100 years of lifesaving in 2009.
The Centurions will build on the distinguished and proud history of the club and bring former members, who have contributed over the years, back to the club to meet old friends again. They will also meet the members who are so successfully carrying on the great tradition of the club established way back in 1909.
The Centurion Members are asked to donate $100 per annum for the next five years. The total of $500 can also be paid up front. It is hoped to raise $100,000 over the next five years.
The funds raised will be used to plan and celebrate our centenary, particularly the publication of a history of the club’s 100 years of life saving. Each Centurion will receive a complimentary copy of the history book and will be acknowledged in the book as a supporter through the Centurions.
It is planned to hold a series of events for the Centurions leading up to the 100th Anniversary Dinner. Complimentary attendance at the Anniversary Dinner will be one of the privileges for this special group of members.
There has already been an enthusiastic response from past and current members going back as far as the 1940s and there is strong support for the concept to be an ongoing activity.
Former members are invited to join the Centurions and renew their contact with the club.

Do You Have Any Newport Memorabilia?
To build our growing collection of Newport Surf Club memorabilia we are making a call for any photographs, records or any other item that will help us celebrate our centenary.
How long is it since you looked in the garage, your attic or any other nooks and crannies around the house where these Newport gems may be collecting dust and spider webs? Perhaps it is part of granddad’s or mum’s collection. No Redback spiders please!
Back in the 50s and before the days of women in lifesaving there was a women’s group attached to the club. We would like to hear from women who belonged to that group.
We would love to receive any items you may have to help with the history book of Newport’s100 years of lifesaving.
Photographs can be scanned and returned to you.
Please let us know if you have any memorabilia by contacting the club or by phoning Col McLean on 9997 5959.
